




Markus Winkler studied concert oboe, conducting (specialising in choral conducting; lessons with Günther Theuring, Johannes Prinz and Leopold Hager) and music theory at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (graduating in 2007 with a thesis entitled "The first volume of Carlo Gesualdo's 'Sacrae
Cantiones‘ by Carlo Gesualdo – practical new edition of the musical text’).
Since 2007, he has been teaching ensemble singing/conducting, composition and music theory at the Conservatory for Church Music of the Archdiocese of Vienna.
Since 2023, he has been a lecturer at the Joseph Haydn Private University of Burgenland (2023 lecturer in composition, since 2024 lecturer in vocal ensemble).
During his studies, he conducted several choirs and was assistant choir director at the Vienna Singakademie, where he worked with renowned conductors and orchestras. He was the founder and artistic director (2002-2012) of the Lower Austrian Youth Choir ‘vox iuventutis’, the Vienna Jeunesse Choir and the Upper School Choir of the Vienna Boys' Choir. Since 2001, he has been the regional choir director in the Lower Austrian Choir Association.
In addition to his educational and artistic activities, he completed training as a professional speaker and speech coach at the School of Speech in 2017/2018 and has since worked at this institute as a speech coach and freelance speaker.
As a conductor, his focus is on early music and classical music (including the premiere and reconstruction of G.B. Platti's Miserere, Vivaldi: Gloria, Credo, Handel: Messiah, Anthems, Keiser: St Mark Passion, Mozart: Requiem, Masses, Symphonies, Haydn: Creation, Seasons, Stabat Mater, Salve Regina, symphonies, Pergolesi: Stabat Mater, Purcell: Dido and Aeneas, Fauré: Requiem, Rossini: Petite Messe Solennelle), but also in contemporary music (Nystedt, W. Wagner, Genzmer, Kratochwil, Pärt, Britten, Gulda, Chilcott, among others).
In March 2026, Markus Winkler will lead an international Erasmus+ programme in Eisenstadt and conduct Joseph Haydn's Stabat Mater and Salve Regina in the Bergkirche.
